Cumberland Island National Seashore
We will be walking the 5.5 mile loop that starts at Sea Camp dock and ends there. All along the way, a guide will be sharing information about the history and natural history found on Cumberland Island. Points of interest will be: visiting the Ice House Museum, touring around the Carnegie's Dungeness mansion and the historical district, hunting for shark's teeth (if tide allows), walking over a marsh via boardwalk, exploring the maritime forest, and walking on a mile of Cumberland's undisturbed beaches. This will be a guided tour of Cumberland, and we will be walking at a certain pace to ensure we make it back to the ferry on time. There will, though, be some time where participants can walk independently on the beach and around the historic district to take pictures and comb for seashells if desired. Empty seashells and sharks teeth are allowed to be collected, but only these items can be taken off the island. Come with a camera, prepared to take in the beautiful scenery that will be all around you!Ferry will leave at 9:00 am, and it won't wait! It is a 45 minute ferry ride over to the island. We will be taking the 4:45 pm ferry back over to St. Mary's, which means we'll get back to St. Mary's (mainland) by 5:30 pm.
Please pack a lunch and any snacks you'd like for the day, as there are no concessionaires over on the island. A backpack would be very helpful to carry all your materials throughout the day. There is a small snack bar on the ferry with limited items for sale. Everything you pack over will need to be packed back off the island, as there are no trash cans anywhere. Make sure to look at the weather for the day, as there are no indoor activities all day long, and dress appropriately. You will want to pack at least 1-2 water bottles for the day; there will be points where water will not be available for 2-3 hours during certain points of the walk, but there is potable water at different locations on our day hike. This will be the same with restrooms; there are restrooms along our walk, but we will have periods of time where they're unavailable for 2-3 hours. We'll be hiking 5.5-6 miles so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for sun exposure; sunscreen and hats are helpful when out on the beach.
Meet at: 113 St. Mary's Street in St. Mary's, GA by 8:00 am. Meet at the National Park Service and Ferry Check-in Building. We will need to check-in with the ferry company and pay National Park fees, so please be on time. There will be time to look around the gift shop and use the restroom before boarding the ferry. There are long term parking spaces around the check-in building as well as short-term. Make sure you don't park in the short-term spaces all day, as you will get a ticket. These spaces are clearly marked, so just look out for these.
Cost: $40 for members. $60 for non-members (will include an annual membership to GAME)
This will cover your ferry ticket over to the island and the National Park fee. If you are a Senior Park Pass holder or Annual Pass holder for national parks, feel free to bring that pass to help cover National Park fees. GAME will be purchasing your ferry tickets as you register, and there are no refunds from the ferry company. Because of this, there will be no reimbursements for your trip fees, and we will not guarantee a ticket for you until payment is received. Once you register for the field trip, we will purchase your ticket and guarantee you a spot on the trip. Ferry tickets may sell out, and GAME has no control over this. Please register for this trip as soon as you know you'd like to join. There is no maximum number of participants; there is only the limitation on ferry tickets available.
Must register by February 14!
